because you can’t talk about thor without talking about loki. thor is the man who follows loki into the dark, who is desperately, desperately trying to bring his brother back from the edge, despite all the laws of nature; that loki is the agent of chaos and the bringer of the ragnarok, that this is fate, that the dead stay dead. i don’t have a doubt in mind that if he was going to choose, definitively, between the avengers/earth/asgard even and loki, he’d choose loki every time. he’d choose to bring back his shade of a brother over the bounty of the earth, over the sun, over the laws of nature. and the tragic part of it all is that he can’t look at his brother, he can’t look back, because if he looks back then loki is lost. and that’s why he never understands loki fully, because he can’t look at him and see the absolute truth, because the sun cannot ever truly comprehend the dark.

It’s spookytime! For those of you who may not know, I have a tradition of writing horror or otherwise Halloween-themed fics for October. I’m behind schedule this year and floundering trying to get ready (feel free to throw prompts at me, if you think of anything that seems like it might be up my alley) but for now here’s a list of my previous spookyfics, best read in the dark:

  • Dead wings carried like a paper kite (thorki, graphic violence, death, horror) (49k words) In the heat of battle, Loki kills his brother. As soon as Thor lies dead at his feet, though, he realizes this is not what he wanted. So he brings Thor back, and surely all is well again. Right?

    This is by far my most disturbing fic, IMO. It took me four years to write it. I think I got it right.

  • October (thorki, psychological trauma, dark themes, dubcon) (10k words) Thor moves into a new neighborhood where everyone seems to be really into Halloween, except the old house on the corner…

    Maybe a sweet little spooky romance. Maybe.

  • Hail and Farewell (thorki, broken relationship) (4k words) Thor has had enough and he leaves Asgard, abandons his godhood, and starts another life as a heavy metal musician, playing gigs and leaching off the power his fans give him when they call his name. He is content, until one day one of his kin shows up to plead for him to return.

    Type O Negative-inspired aesthetic with urban witch asshole!Thor and sad!Loki. 

  • Blood Is Life and sequel Blood Is Life (Eternal) (thorki, vampires, violence and death) (12k words) Where Loki comes from, vampires are being hunted down and killed, so he runs north, hoping to find somewhere safe. Along the way he comes across a perfect mortal minion. 

    I read way too much Anne Rice in my youth. I’m actually quite fond of these two little fics, and everybody’s gotta write a vampire story eventually, right? 

  • The Joy of Vivisection (thorki, character death, blood and gore, torture) (5k words) With Odin asleep and Thor banished, instead of trying to use the Bifrost for his purposes, Loki comes up with a somewhat different way of dealing with his Jotun problem… 

    Loki is a goddamn mess. 

  • Like His Long Sleep (thorki, spooky, dark elements) (3.5k words)

    When Odin dies in battle, Thor inherits the Odinforce—and the Odinsleep. When he cannot be woken, the people of Asgard call upon the new king’s sorcerous brother-enemy for help. But Loki’s intentions soon go awry, and he just might be in over his head.

    Loki is a goddamn mess once again, though in a completely different way this time. He’s good at that.

  • Chasm (thorki, character death, torture, dark elements) (2k words) Thor has been captured by Dark Elves and chained in a cave. Loki comes to him.

    Mixing smut with horror. Fun times. 

  • Haunted by Shadows, Shadowed by Death (thorki, character death, fantasized necrophilia) (300 words) After Loki’s death on Svartalfheim, Thor mourns. After that, the daydreams begin.

    Just a wee little dark ficlet set after TDW.

  • If only we could wake up soon and scream (Loki/Sigyn, myth-based, horror and gore, torture, character death) (10k words) When Loki is chained in the cave, everyone expects that he will eventually escape. What if, instead, he gives up?

    One of my older fics and certainly not my best, but I still like the concept. 

  • Sea and Storm (thorki, violence, character death) (2k words) A storm. A shipwreck in the middle of the ocean. Sailors bobbing on the water, struggling to survive against the hostile creatures of the deep. But there is always more to the story than that.

    Merman Loki and sailor Thor, unpleasant version.

  • Over Now (thor + loki or past thorki, character death) (1.3k words) 

    A dark post-Ragnarok ficlet in which things are not okay…

    This one draws inspiration from Rune Thor during the last comics Ragnarok. I hadn’t seen IW yet when I wrote it, obviously. But… well.

Reblobbing to add a couple more. They weren’t originally meant as spookyfics, but they’re a bit creepy I think.

  • Beautiful (thorki, smut, dark elements, vague warning) (2k words) Loki conjures a pair of Thors. He and Thor watch. Then he wants Thor to join them, because they’re all beautiful.

    When I wrote this one, the ending surprised me. I had no idea it was going where it went. 

  • And on a fine May morning (2.5k words) (thor + loki, character death) 

    When Loki is still a child, Laufey comes to Asgard to demand the return of his son. Reluctantly, Odin and Frigga comply. Years later, the two brothers will meet again.

    Idk why, but the recent “What if?” comics made me think of this one again. Much tragedy, much sadness, but it’s inspired by a Child-ballad-based prompt so what would you expect.

  • Struggle and Strive Just to Stay Alive (violence, character death, vague thorki, implied child abuse, underage solo) (4k words) The only thing Loki’s ever found in his life that makes him important is what he can do because no one notices the mad bum in the fuzzy hat.

    A fic based on the brief Thors comic, giving hobo Loki a backstory. I love hobo Loki. He deserved a bleak, creepy history.
